What's The Difference Between Online And Traditional Graphic Design Schools?

By Gemilda V. Lovett

Anyone considering taking classes at graphic design schools in their town will have lots of decisions to make. One of the biggest decisions to make as a student today is whether or not to take the traditional route or go with online classes. There are many benefits to both options for students just out of high school or those who are returning to school.

Traditional graphic design schools require students to visit campus in person for several years by the time they graduate. On-campus activities and extracurricular, in class lectures, and live interaction with other students and professors are all benefits of traditional education. Indeed, students have gone to traditional schools for many years. Online schooling consists of taking courses through the Internet and even submitting assignments to teachers through e-mail, or an internet Dropbox. Both options can take about the same amount of effort to complete to get a degree.

For a number of years, standard schooling has been the best option to get a great education. This was before the Internet when long distance courses meant sending homework in through the US Postal Service, talking with teachers via telephone conferences and watching lectures on television. It was easier for students to get their education by taking a traditional class in person where they could get immediate answers to their queries to teachers. It was also easier to get a job with certification from traditional graphic design schools because these programs were accredited and the degree had more value for employers. Students also have the benefit of interacting with other classmates on campus and developing healthy friendships and networks for the future.

Nowadays, the online graphic design schools can give students access to a helpful education that is as valuable as a traditional program. The graphic design programs through these online schools can now be accredited so the degree has the same value as a traditional diploma. Students can work on their own schedule, but still get near instant responses from teachers and even help with other students online. An Internet-based course can also be more affordable than traditional schooling with fewer fees and extraneous costs related to getting to school every day.

Traditional and Internet-based design schools have plenty of differences. However, modern technology has made it possible to close the gap in educational quality between these two options. A traditional program may still allow you more opportunity for networking and socialization. Following the traditional route allows students to interact with other classmates and teachers live on campus and take their course work any direction they please at the moment of inspiration. Online courses have their benefits to, including lots of flexibility and lower costs for students who have to watch their budget.
