What is SEO?

By Craig Thomas

SEO, known as, "Search Engine Optimization" is the process of bringing your website up into the top ten organic results on Google, Bing and Yahoo! This process can be done either by a webmaster or a professional who has been doing it for quite some time.

What does SEO need to work properly? The art of SEO is very exacting. Once you have selected and researched the keywords that will work best for your business you want to limit the number of keywords to a maximum of 5, especially if they are unusual. You then want to build backlinks to your website using these keywords. It is important that any anchor text associated with these links is correct.

If you have a website that is primarily offering home remodeling you want the backlink pointing to your website have home remodeling in the anchor text. Because the major search engines will penalize you, do not use the same anchor text over and over or your website ranking with be negatively impacted.

How important is SEO? Time is money is a business adage that certainly applies. Designing correct website structure, website content, link building and advertising your website will take effort and time. Organic search results do not cost anything and can generate a great deal of traffic to your website depending on the keywords you are using. If a specific keyword you are using generates 50 visitors per day and each visitor gives you $25 and you convert at 2%, which would mean that free organic visitors are generating 1 sale per day.

What is the best way to find a quality SEO business? It can be an adventure trying to find the best SEO company for your needs. You want to know how they plan to get your website to rank so you will be at the top of organic search results. Do not go with a business that does not correctly build links and offers marketing advice that can cause more harm than good. Get an idea of what they have done for their other clients and ask to see ranking reports that show a history of improvement. Do your homework and shop around to make sure you chose the SEO company that can best get the results you need.
