Do Your Keyword Research!

By Mike Bundrant

Would you attempt to build an intricate set of custom drawers for your kitchen without making the effort measure the space available and cut the wood to blueprint? Imagine the results of just making a guess on all of the measurements. Measure twice, cut once "the adage is still true each time and there isn't any substitute for adequate preparation. If this does not sound reasonable to you, then you can stop reading right here because you won't have an interest in stuff like keyword research.Would you take a trip across Europe without a map? How about circumnavigate the globe on a sailboat with no compass, GPS or ocean charts? Care to find your way around the Tokyo tube system with no map or guide? Naturally you would not do any of these crazy things.Yet, maybe you know someone who has launched a domain, or written articlesonline without doing any keyphrase analysis. This is like, well, placing a plain-covered, untitled book on some obscure shelf in the Long Island Public Library and expecting it to get some attention. It won't occur, irrespective of how good the book is.

What results should you expect when publishing a website with no key phrase research?

Toss a blank envelope into the daily stream of postal mail and what will happen to it? Drop a message in a bottle in the middle of the Pacific and wait for a response. Get an unlisted telephone number and sit there waiting for calls. Place a grain of sand in the Sahara Desert and tell somebody to go and find it. OK, I'm running out of metaphors, but I am hoping you know how completely crucial key phrase research is if you'd like visitors to your website.

There is simply no substitute unless you have a belief in simple luck, which can work in your favour sometimes, but is no strategy on which to build a business. Researching topical and easy competition keywords before you write your article and plugging them into the proper places in your webpage is like placing yourself in the right in the middle of a shopping center with a brilliant product at a fabulous price. Folks will see you, get your product and many thanks for being there.Going for keywords with too high competition is like going up against WalMart with common home goods. Seriously, you do not have a prayer to rank against the web behemoths for the most popular keywords. You need to get a way in through the back door.

The message of the story: DO YOUR Key Phrase Research! Identify important, medium-traffic and low competition search terms and phrases to tackle. If you have got a low ranking website (PR 0-2) don't choose keywords with sites on the first page of Google that rank higher than PR3. Be reasonable. As you build your sites popularity with Google with the search websites, you may rank higher and higher and more competitive keywords will be available to you.
